Diesel Electric Honda Insight
“Just replaced the gasoline engine in a Honda Insight with a Diesel engine. On a 3,000 mile cross-country shakedown journey the car averaged 92mpg over 1,800 miles. Around a very hilly town in Northwest Washington, the car is averaging 78mpg. These mileage averages are without the electric side of the vehicle fully functional. With a bit more tinkering on the electric side and through a slight gearing change through tire size, it is anticipated that the car will likely average 100mpg. The build for the car has been documented on the web site and is as close to open source as my time allows. The car was built by two guys in a garage in Southern Maryland. If we can do it I don’t see any reason why major auto manufacturers can’t do it since we used their parts.” —Jake Staub

Marketing Falsehoods
“Once upon a time, Microsoft said that Windows Vista would transform life as we knew it. Palm said its Foleo was a breakthrough. Circuit City said firing its most experienced salespeople would save the company. And Apple said that Web apps were all that iPhone owners needed. I’ve collected the original press releases for these and other ill-fated tech announcements, and annotated them with the facts as they played out in the real world.”—Harry

Poor Nigerian Scammers
Noone thinks about how the harsh economic times are keeping them from their expensive, yet, unearned cars.
“The Washington Post reports that online swindling takes dedication even in the best of times but succeeding in the midst of a worldwide economic meltdown takes patience, resolve, and hard work. ‘We are working harder. The financial crisis is not making it easy for them over there,’ said Banjo, 24, speaking about Americans, whose trust he has won and whose money he has fleeced, via his Dell laptop. ‘They don’t have money. And the money they don’t have, we want.’ US authorities say Americans — the easiest prey, according to Nigerian scammers — still lose hundreds of millions of dollars a year to cybercrimes, including a scheme known as the Nigerian 419 fraud, named for a section of the Nigerian criminal code. 419 is cemented in Nigerian popular culture. and the scammers, known as ‘yahoo-yahoo boys,’ are glorified in pop songs such as ‘Yahoozee,’ which gained even more fame after former secretary of state Colin L. Powell danced to it at a London festival last year.” –The Narrative Fallacy

Xbox 360 Repair

Well, my first attempt at repairing the dreaded 3 RROD on the 360 has gone well. It took about an hour and a half since it was my first time taking one apart. Anytime I try something like this for the first time I like to be careful until I see exactly how everything is connected.

Anyhow, I’ve decided to repair anyone’s 360 that is having problems for $50 (this will include any supplies I need for the repair). I’m thinking about offering this as a service and if I can’t fix it (for whatever reason) then I will not charge. What do you think?

I will make a list of the parts I used for the repair in the forum attached to this post. I’ll also be happy to detail how it was done if anyone feels they can do this themselves. I do, however, encourage you to think twice about doing it yourself unless you are comfortable with taking electronics such as this apart. I’ve been taking Xboxs and electronics such as this apart for a long time, so I’m comfortable at this point.

Any questions about this repair service, just contact PM me or post in the forum attached to this post.

Modding…ummm…yikes

“Matthew Crippen was arrested yesterday for hacking game consoles (for profit) in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. He was released on a $5,000 bond, but faces up to 10 years in prison. This is terribly disturbing to me; a man could lose 10 years of his freedom for providing the service of altering hardware. He could well lose much of his freedom for providing a modicum of it to others. There is no piracy going on, necessarily — the games a modified console could run may simply not be signed by the vendor. It’s much like jailbreaking an iPhone. But it seems because he is disabling a ‘circumvention device’ it is a criminal issue. Guess it’s time to kick a few dollars over to the EFF.” —Jhoger

Not exactly like this is an uncommon thing. I guess he was just a little too “relaxed” with how he spread the word. People have been modding consoles for years to play digitally unsigned material.
